Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

NPS Patch Cleans up At Leeton Show

NPS Patch and Hen's Shed won several sections at the Leeton Show icluding first places for a Plate of Pod Peas, a Bunh of Silverbeet, Onions, a Bunch of Herbs and Half a Dozen Eggs which came from our ducks. We were awarded certificates and prize money.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Book Week Author Visit

Narrandera Library has invited Narrandera Public students to join with students from Narrandera East and St Joseph to celebrate Book Week with an Author visit.

Lisa Shanahan an Australian author will be visiting from Sydney. We have a number of her books in our school library so this will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet an author face to face.

Our students, with teacher supervision will be walking to the Narrandera CRC Hall on Friday 24th August, 2018 and attending the following sessions:

9.30am - 10.30am - Years 3,4,5,6

11.45am - 12.45 pm - K,1,2

Park permission note covers this so all children will be attending unless families contact the school to say otherwise.

We are redoing our whirly gigs. We would like some 2 litre drink bottles and smaller ones, we also repurpose any size plastic lid, so please send them in with your children to Mrs Seymour or Miss Bonham.

We have been busy in The Patch moving our compost bins and using the amazing compost we made in the garden beds. If you find yourself at a loss for things to do, we can always use an extra hand on Thursday afternoons. Thank you, Mrs Seymour

Carnivale Huge Success

To celebrate Education Week 2018 NPS held their biannual Carnivale celebrations.

Each class studied a country which they showcased through preparing a traditional food and decorating their classroom to show different aspects of that country.

Thirteen different countries were represented this year. About 100 parents and friends joined students and staff for a food tasting before taking a "tour", of each country.

Proud House Captains Jakeem Morgan and Corinya Lyons after Kywong House were successful in winning the recent NPS Swimming Carnival.

It was a very successful day despite the heat with students from Kindergarten to year six enjoying both fun activities and races. As always the relays were very exciting and hotly contested.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped out on the day, we can't run carnivals without volunteers and we thank you for your help on the day.

Congratulations to everyone who participated. Some students really surprised themselves with what they were able to achieve.

Brad is now travelling to Sydney as part of thr Riverina team to play in the state knockout from May 17th - 21st. The knockout will be played at Blacktown. Boys Basketball Success

On Thursday 14^thAugust the Boys Basketball team travelled to Griffith to play Griffith North Public School.

The team consisted of Seth Bolton, Mareece McDonald, Ryan Prior, Rowan Matthews, Brad Hutchison, Noah Bolton and Heath Wasley Reilly.

GNPS came out strong and were leading for the first quarter but by half time we had improved our defence and we in the lead 21-12.

The final score was 45 -24. Scorers were Heath 12, Rowan 12, Noah 11, Seth 4, Mareece 4, Brad 2

Thanks to Rebecca Reilly for helping with transporting us to Griffith.

Spotlight on Grandparents

Grandparents and families visited Narrandera Public School last Thursday to share afternoon tea with their Grandchildren.

Grandparents are very special people and some children in Year 5 wrote about the special times they have shared with their Grandparents.

My Nan and I always made pancakes and I got to flip them and one almost got stuck on the roof.

One day my Pop came to the pool with us and went on the snake slide and he got stuck and Mykala and I had to push him down. Paige

My Pop and I every school holidays go and have the biggest competitions of golf out at the golf course. After that we get an icecream. Ned

When I was little I was out fishing with my Pop and I caught my first fish ever.

At Nan and Pops all the kids were there and we were all in the pool and it was one of the best days of my life. Rowan

When I was little I would go to my Poppy's every weekend and have a sleep over. I have heaps of photos at home with Poppy in them. I've got a photo at home when Poppy and I were in his old red ute. I have lots og memories to remember him by. Ella

On Sundays we usually go to the Yanco Club for lunch with Nan and Pop. Sometimes Pop lets us ride on his lawn mower and sometimes he makes pikelets. After school we go to their house and have biscuits. The thing I like the most is going to the Club for lunch. Jacob

When I used to live in Brisbane my Grandad used to take my sisters and I to the Goldcoast. We went to the beach and the place where you go into the rooms and they look 3D. My Nan took me to Dreamworld and we went on this ride that did not look scary but it was. Every Christmas I get spoilt by my Nan and Grandad. Audrey

NPS Dancers get ready for School Spec

The Narrandera Public School Dance group is busy rehearsing for their upcoming performance in The School's Spectacular, which will be held in Sydney on November 29 and 30. Our school performed with distinction at last year's Spectacular and this year's group are looking forward to the trip to Sydney. It is a wonderful experience for our children to be able to participate in this event.

Year 2B Make Butter & Ice Cream

As a part of their studies of solids and liquids in Science, year 2 have beem experimenting with some Kitchen Chemistry! Over the past 2 weeks, this has included making chocolate Crackles, butter and icecream. The best part of experiments like this is the tasting at the end. Next week they will be looking at yeast and making pancakes.

Bumper Crop inSchool Vegetable Patch

Nearly every class at NPS has adopted a vegetable and planted it in our school vegetable patch. We have loads of different vegetables growing, carrots, radishes, tomatoes and zuchini to name a few.

Each class spends some time in the garden each week making sure it is watered and weeded. Mr Lucas has a special group whe work on the garden each Friday and Mrs Seymour has some willing helpers who have just made some scarecrows to hopefull frifhten the birds away, so we get to eat the produce before they do!

We are all looking forward to being able to harvest our first crop in the near future.

Stage 3 Students In Fisheries Promotional DVD Release

Some of our Stage 3 students were involved in the production, filming & acting in a promotional DVD for the John Lake Centre/Narrandera Fisheries. Now that the DVD has been completed, these students went out to the fishery for the launch of the DVD.

Dog Safety Visit

Kindergarten, year one and year two had a special visit from some guests talking to us about dog safety, and the rules for both looking after a pet dog and how to deal with strange and savage dogs. Some of the children also got to pat the dog at the end of the talk.

New Athletics Equipment at NPS

Due to the hard work of Mr Colin Burrell, we now have athletics field event equipment at our school. This means we no longer have to travel off the school grounds to participate in future school Sports Carnivals. The new facilities include Shot Put and Discus Rings and two long jump pits.

School Getting Garden Makeovers

There has been a lot of gardening going on around the school lately. Potted colour is decorating the school entrances, and we have a new vegetable garden down on the bottom playground area, where each class will be encouraged to take responsibilty for a part of it and try their hands at growing some healthy and delicious food, strawberries have already been planted! A big thanks to Mrs Seymour and her band of helpers for keeping a lot of the garden beds and pot looking great.

LIONS CLUB PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH FREE BBQ

Narrandera Lions Club has generously provided a free BBQ lunch to all students who attended a session at the life Education Van which has been visiting us during the last week. Children attending lessons in the van have the opportunity to meet Healthy Harold and learn about making healthy and positive choices.

Every Tuesday afternoon the whole school population now form mixed grade groups and participate in a wide variety of fun activities for the last session of the day. Kindergarten and years one, two and three work together, and years four, five and six make up the other rotation. Children participate in a new activity each week and are enjoying things such as cartoon drawing, knitting, cooking, marimba, dance and ping pong to name but a few.

Today our school cross country was hel, this year being run in and around the school grounds. The weather was great and the times and levels of participation were excellent. On a regular basis, NPS students are given the opportunity to travel to The Riverina Environmental Education Centre to participate in Gifted and Talented activities. Recently 4 of our year 6 students spent a day there involved in a mixture of fun Science and problem solving activities. They are joined by year 6 students from many other schools, so it is an opportunity for them to develop new friendships as well as have fun and learn new things. On this most recent trip students Mav Perram, Rachel Beer, Michael Morton and Tyler Beaumont had the opportunity to go. Special thanks to Mel Beer who kindly took the children over for the day. Another 4 students will be going to the centre this Friday and they are bound to have a great day.

Regional Cross Country Reps

NPS students Jayden Mohr, Kiara Bloomfield, Eilish Simpson, Paige Godden and Rowan Matthews, recently travelled to Deniliquin to participate in the Riverina Regional Cross Country Carnival. They were selected to represent on the basis of their good performances both at the school's carnival and then the District Carnival which was held at Yanco Agricultural High School. Congratulations to these students for their excellent achievement in making it to this level of representation.

Rowan Matthews, a year 3 student at our school, is the newly crowned 8/9 year, boys, Cross Country Champion. Rowan, along with about 60 other NPS students, travelled to Yanco Agricultural High School last Friday to participate in the District PSSA Cross Country Carnival. Although all students has a great day, Rowan was the only winner from our school at the carnival. Rowan will now go on to represent at District level later in the year. Congratulations to Rowan on your great achievement.

PCYC Lead School Sport.

We are very luck to have the PCYC visiting our school each Friday for the next 11 weeks to conduct sporting activities for us. At this stage, they are here for 8 weeks this term and a further 4 weeks next term. In the first round of activities they have been instructing the children in gymnastics, boxing and archery. All children from kinder to year 6 are paticipating, and if the large smiles are any indication, thoroughly enjoying these activities.

Mother's Day Picnic

What a fantastic turnout we had for our recent Mother's Day Picnic! It was terrific to see so many families enjoying the weather and each other's company over a picnic lunch in the top playground. The children really love family visiting them at school, some proudly showing parents and grandparents their classrooms and work while they were here.

N.P.S. Fete

On Saturday we held a very successful fete in the school grounds. The fete was the culmination of a great deal of hard work and planning by the P&C and a group of parents, staff and students who worked very hard to ensure the success of the day. There was a good turnout on the day, people taking the opportunity to enjoy the fantastic weather and the many activities on offer.

There were a wide variety of stalls selling things as varied as food, books, baby clothing, mother's day gifts and plants. There was plenty to do for all ages including a jumping castle, face painting, pony rides and the Lyons Train. Many were spectators for the Talent Quest which was held in our new hall, Rusty and Joe Romeo were the judges. Rachel Warren won first place with Ruby Payne Crocker coming second.

The day was a big success and raised approximately $5000.00 which will be spent on projects which will benefit all children at the school. A very big thank you to all businesses and families who supported the day, and helped make it a success.

New Sporting Equipment

A huge thanks to everyone who collected Coles dockets for the school, we have now taken posession of lots of new sporting equipment and a flash new trolley to store it all on. This will be located in the playground each lunch time for the children to use. Everyone was very excited about using the new equipment!

Cooper Irons Makes Riverina Australian Rules Side!

After making it to a possible and probables side, Cooper Irons, a year 6 student, has now been selected in the Riverina side.

He will now represent, along with his team mates, at the State Carnival, which will be held at Blacktown sometime in May. Congratulations Cooper!

Girls Riverina Softball Reps

Five of our senior girls travelled to Albury this week under the watchful eye of Mrs Cassidy, to attend trials for Riverina selection. All the girls represented their school with pride and sportsmanship, and learnt a great deal. Two of the girls, Jamilla Sharpley and Kiara Bloomfield were lucky (and talented) enough to be selected to play in the Riverina girls softball side. They will now participate in the State carnival in Manly in August. Congratulations girls, it is a wonderful effort.

District Swimming Carnival

Narrandera Public School hosted the PSSA Leeton/Narrandera district swimming carnival at Lake Talbot Swimming Complex last week. Participating wereParkview Public, Leeton Public, Narrandera Public and the Small Schools group comprising Whiyyom, Wamoon, Murrami and Yanco.

Narrandera Public came second overall and second in the handicap award. We were well represented in the awarding of age champions, winning three of the six awards. William Roffe won 11 year boy's Champion, Eilish Simpson, Senior Girls Champion and Josiah Romeo was awarded Senior Boys Champion.

Several of our students will now compete in the Regional Carnival which will be held in Albury early next month

This week we held a school social in our new hall with the theme of "Come as Someone Famous!" There were lots of celebreties there including Marylin Munroe, a Jedi Knight, Buzz Lightyear, Rhianna, Usher, Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne to name a few. All funds raised are going towards reducing the cost of the senior excursion which will be to Canberra later in the year.

Swimming Carnival

N.P.S. Swimming Carnival 2011

Last week we held our annual swimming carnival at Lake Talbot. Mr Lucas did a great job of organising the day and it ran really smoothly. Many thanks to all the parent helpers who gave up their time to make it such a successful event. Our successfull swimmers will now participate in the District Carnival which will be held on Wednesday 23rd of February at Lake Talbot Pool.

Although the results were very close, the winning house on the day was Morundah on 884 points, followed by Widgiewa on 884 points and in third place were Kywong on 710 points. The age champions on the day were;

Year 6 Farewell

On Tuesday evening, Year 6 students and their parents gathered at The Golf Club for a night of fun, food, memories, presentations and dancing. Everyone dressed up and looked terrific. The children had a meal with their parents before the more official part of the evening got under way.

Year 6 students were presented with their graduation certificates, a gift bag of goodies, then the school captains, Wyatt Gilbert and Emily Roffe cut the graduation cake on behalf of all year 6.

After the official part of the evening had concluded, the year 5 students arrived to join Year 6 for a disco. It was a great evening, very special for Year 6, so many thanks to all who both helped to prepare for the evening, and who attended on the evening and helped make it a success.

Fun Day

Year 5/6 Funday

Recently year 5 and 6 held a fun day at school to raise money for the Year 6 Farewell. There were over 30 stalls, and plenty of activities and food for everyone to enjoy.

Some of the activies included the jumping castle, show bags, jaffa smasher, sponge toss, face painting, makeup, hair and nails, hoop la, apple bobbing and water balloons to name but a few.

This year we were joined by the year 2 students from Narrandera East who also enjoyed the day. We raised nearly $2000 which went very close to covering the cost of the Year 6 Farewell.

Thank you to all the students and parents who helped us get ready for the day and a special thanks to Rob Norrie and Rotary who were kind enough to loan us the jumping castle for the day.

Scientists In Schools Visit

Year 5 students had a recent visit from Cameron Samuell, a PHD student who is working in the Plasma Research Laboratory of the Australian National University in Canberra. Cameron was at the school as part of the Scientists in schools programme, designed to raise interest and awareness of Science as a profession.

Cameron spoke to the students about electricity, sources of renewable energy and why finding sustainable sources in necessary, and about his studies at university. Cam, also showed the children a number of experiments using plasmas, which was very popular and quite spectacular when one of the light bulbs exploded!

Cameron and his colleagues have invited the students to visit them at their laboratory when we visit Canberra on our senior excursion next year, and he plans to visit and work with our students in the future.

Free Swimming School

It's getting warm again, and that means Narrandera Public School Swimming Lessons begin. We have recently had the Beach to Bush people visit and talk to us about safety at the beach, now we put some of those ideas into practise at Lake Talbot Pool.

Being safe around water is a priority for us, and now that there is water in creeks and dams after some good rain, it is important that our students are able to keep themselves safe while swimming.

This year we have been able to provide all our students, from kinder to year 6 with the two weeks of intensive swimming lessons for free, which has ben a real bonus for our students and their parents. The children are not only learning some important skills, but they are also having fun.

Beach To Bush

We had a recent visit from surf lifesavers from Dee Why beach in Sydney who taught us about keeping safe at the beach, in the water and in the sun. They also taught us about blue bottles and box jellyfish and what first aid is needed if we happen to run into one if ever on holidays at the beach. They brought with them magnets and activity books for each student.

Boy's Softball Team Win Again!

NPS Boys Softball Team Make State Semi Finals

Congratulations to the NPS Boys Softball team who made a magnificent comeback from being 10 - 3 down to win their quarter final match against Jerabombera. The team now travel to Sydney to play in the state semi finals at the softball diamonds at Blacktown which were the olympic venue. This is very exciting for the whole school and we wish them the best of luck.

School Reunion

Last Monday we were visited by the "Class of 1960", who had gathered back in Narrandera for a school reunion, some were even wearing their old school uniforms, something a lot of us wish we could still fit into! More than 50 past students came to visit the school, look around the classrooms and attend a special assembly. At the assembly the choir, eukulele group and year 6 Folk Group all performed and the visiting ex students presented the school with a sundial. Our Principal Mrs Ruffles also presented awards to students who had gained their gold hats, Honor Badges, Banners and Gold Certificates. Students who had participated in University Testing, also recieved Certificates of Participation.

Cultural Day

Recently Narrandera Public School held a cultural day which included all students participating in a variety of groups. The day involved students tasting traditional food, art workshops, games, dreamtime stories and looking at and using artifacts. The day was a great success, and we are looking forward to holding another one next year.

Senior Excursion to Borambola

During the last week of last term, more than 50 year 5 and 6 students from Narrandera Public travelled to Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre for our senior excursion.

We all had a great time taking part in activities such as kayaking, orienteering, archery, flying fox, low ropes, fencing, rock climbing and BMX to name but a few.

There were activities each evening to keep us busy too, with a Borambola Market, games, Mini Olympics and a dance party.

The food and accommodation were great, and most of us were able to challenge ourselves and try things we didn't think we could do. Many thanks to all who helped fundraise to help us to go on this great trip.

Year 3 Sleep at School!

RRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNGG!! The bell goes on Friday afternoon and most children skip out of NPS, bubbling over with excitement, anticipating the adventures of the weekend. All except Year 3. They are also bubbling over the excitement, but not at the thought of leaving school... at the opportunity to stay at school, and sleep on the classroom floor! There's been talk of the Year 3 sleepover for weeks now, and copious amounts of questions. "Can I wear my new pink fairy pyjamas?", "Can I bring my stuffed rabbit?", "Can we play ‘murder in the dark'?" "What if we need to go to the toilet in the middle of the night?". The day had finally arrived, and despite the rain, we were going full steam ahead! First on the agenda was a series of team relays and challenges, followed by a scavenger hunt. Congrats to the "Blue Powerade" team! We started training the next contestants of "Master Chef" by enlisting all to help out with dinner prep, and then enjoyed a delicious Mexican Taco feast. After dinner we had a disco and grooved the night away, played some drama games, had a newspaper modelling competition and then finally everybody was allowed to hop into their pyjamas. We thought that the children would start to settle down when the movie went on, but ...we soon realised that this had been quite presumptuous of us! Eventually the last giggle turned into a snore and there was a little silence until sunrise. It was a real blessing to have some sunshine on Saturday morning, and the biting wind made the hot milo even more tasty alongside toast and cereal. We continued warming up with some morning aerobics and then searched for the "X-factor" with our very own Year 3 Talent Quest. By 10AM everyone was completely worn out and the parents came just in time to take them all home for showers and some serious nap time. A great deal of fun was had by all. Thanks to all the students for your energy and enthusiasm and to the parents for releasing your children into our care for a whole 26 hours!

NPS BOYS SOFTBALL TEAM RIVERINA CHAMPIONS

Narrandera Public School's boys softball team have been crowned Riverina champions after thrashing Sturt Public School in the regional final of the PSSA knockout competition. A tough game was expected as Sturt are always quality opposition, having been in the regional final several times over the last few years. Narrandera were sent into bat and batted extremely well, scoring 6 runs in the first inning. We took the field with great enthusiasm and were rewarded with only 1 run being scored against us. Our second inning at bat was simply outstanding , scoring 22 runs. Sturt scored 1 run in their second inning. In the third inning, we scored 5 runs to Sturt's 2. The final score was an impressive 33-4.

The entire team playing outstandingly and it was a true team effort. The boys have worked extremely hard and their positive attitude and great support of one another a great highlight of the game. To reach the final, we defeated Corowa PS 31-1 and Finley PS 31-11.

We now play the winner of the South Coast region. (Jerrabomberra PS, Lindsay Park PS in Wollongong and Balarang PS in Oak Flats are still in contention)

The boys owe their success to their dedication to training and wonderful attitude. A big thanks to Claire Bolton & Amy Bolton for helping us with transport. Thanks also to Richard Gilbert who always helps us at training.

Boys Softtball Team Win Again

On Tuesday Our boys softball team played Finley in the Semi Final of the PSSA Knockout. The boys played with a lot of skill and commitment and were victorious to the tune of 31-11. The boys are a real chance of winning the competition this year if they maintain their current form. Their next opponents will be a Wagga side, yet to be determined. Congratulations to the boys and to Mr Lyne their coach.

Bike Kitchen

Narrandera Public are running a new program is for mechanically minded students. The Bike Kitchen is a program that recycles old bikes, while giving students the skills and information to maintain and return these bikes to roadworthy condition. It also promotes cycle for health and knowledge about road rules. The programs goals are to build school pride, and team work skills, familiarity with using tools and to create a link with students , school and the community.

We are after any old bike frames and bike parts, donations of enamel paint, oil, grease and even tools, so we are able to keep this program running throughout the year. Thank you to the Narrandera Shire council who has helped by donating discarded bikes, parts and frames. We hope other businesses may also become part of our project.

It will be an exciting as different classes and students come on board each term. This term we have started with year 6 students, Thursday afternoon is for the girls and Friday afternoon the boys hone their skills.

Family Fun Evening

The P & C recently held a family fun evening at the school. There were lots of free, fun activities for the children and adults who attended to join in. The volunteers sold BBQ, drinks and ice creams, raising over $400 which will go towards the purchase of new books for the library. Many thanks to all those who attended, volunteered their time or donated goods. It was a great nigh enjoyed by all.

FAMILY FUN EVENING

A Family Fun evening is being planned to welcome all families back to Narrandera Public School for the new school year. The evening will be held at NPS on Friday 26^th February from 5pm till 7pm. There are loads of fun activities planned such as Three-Legged race, Hobby Horse race, Sack races, Egg and Spoon races AND MORE and it is hoped that each year will organise and coordinate an activity on the night.

A BBQ and drinks will be available on the night to help raise money for our school.

If you are able to assist with an activity on the night or have any other activity ideas, please complete the tear-off slip below and return to school by Friday 19^th February.

Term 1 Week 2

We have had a busy start to the school year at N.P.S. with all 12 classes settling into their new routines, and planning for an exciting year ahead. There are lots of happy children and happy teachers with smiles on their faces.

This coming Friday will be our annual Swimming Carnival, which will be held at the Lake Talbot Complex, and will run for the whole day. Widgiewa, Morundah and Kywong will again be competing for the trophy, which Widgiewa currently holds. All parents, friends and community members are welcome to come and watch some stars of the future in action and cheer the children on.

We are expecting a bumper year of competitors following our very successful swimming school held at the end of last year. The whole school, kinder to year six participated in two weeks of intensive swimming lessons to improve style, confidence and water safety.

Our school " makeover" is continuing. The painting of the outside of the school is complete, the new security fence is just waiting on the gates, and our new sign is up and letting everyone know what is going on at the school. Many of the classrooms are also looking fresher, as several staff members gave up some time over the holidays to paint the inside of many of our rooms.

We would like to welcome our many new parents, and welcome back those from previous years. We are looking forward to getting together with you all as our teachers prepare individual learning plans for every child at the school.

School Makeover

Our school is certainly looking great at the moment. So many changes and additions have helped the school really look fresh and new. Our new security fence is just about complete, and not only looks smart but will also keep our buildings and grounds safer out of school hours.

The P&C have purchased new awnings which cover the windows of the year 3 and 4 classrooms. These have made these classrooms much cooler in the afternoons and also look terrific. The colours blend really well with the new colours of the outside of the school. Our new school colour scheme is very different from the old one, but we have had many positive comments about it.

Year 4 rooms have been undergoing a revamp. The hallway outside these rooms is now sporting a new, bright colour scheme, with matching new curtains. It will soon also have new floor coverings which will make it a wonderful learning space. Mrs Cassidy's room has been painted a sunny yellow, Mr Lucas' room will be painted soon. Year 6 classrooms and hallway have also been painted.

Our wonderful P&C and our School Parliament have also purchased new seating for under the newest of our COLA's. The new seats have proven very popular, and have turned this space an outdoor learning space. The new outdoor classroom can be used by the whole school for a variety of activities. Keep an eye on our new sign which will let you know about thing happening in the school.

We would like to congratulate Morundah, the winning house at our Swimming Carnival last week. Congratulations also to Junior Champions, Annie James and William Roffe, Eleven Year Champions, Eilish Simpson and Josiah Romeo, and Senior Champions, Emily Roffe and Wyatt Gilbert.

Fun Day

Last Friday we held the most successful ever Fun Day in the school grounds. Fun Day is organised and run by the year 5, and this year also year 6 students to raise money to pay for the year 6 farewell. This year there were more than 30 stalls with things to do, eat and win. A BIG congratulations to all the children involved, they did a fantastic job and the whole school had a great time.

Modelling

Crashing an Army attack helicopter, repainting the fuselage of a jet fighter and installing a V8 engine may not be usual business at any other primary school. It was however for NPS students who traded their lunch break for modelling workshops. During the year our talented kids joined part A to B and created masterpieces of a different kind including, WW2 fighter planes, rally cars, jet bombers and attack helicopters.

Swimming School

Next week sees the commencement of this year's swimming school for students at Narrandera Public School. This year, students from Kindergarten right through to Year 6 will be learning to swim under the guidance of staff and qualified Aust Swim instructors, many of whom are former students of the school.

The two week program will see children travel by bus to the pool, and undertake intensive water safety and swimming instruction for a session each day. The School sees it as a priority that all children be water safe, especially as the hot weather is here and Christmas Holidays will be upon us before we know it.

Because of this, the school has heavily subsidized the cost of the program. Each child participating pays only $6.00 for the whole two weeks. This is a special one off occurrence as some extra funding became available. It is an excellent opportunity for students to receive lessons from highly qualified instructors at a bargain price.

The school has also purchased a lot of new equipment to support the swimming program, with kick boards, flippers, dive rings, noodles and personal flotation devices among the new items to be used this year.

On The Go

On The Go

We have had another busy couple of weeks at Narrandera Public school. Our swimming school is in its second week with many success stories to its credit. This year kindergarten to year six have all been involved in daily lessons at the pool, which will make our students much more water safe leading up to the Christmas holidays.

We have had a visit from Bec Bully, a player with the N.S.W. Swifts netball team. Bec talked to the children about netball and took groups through their paces, passing on many valuable tips and skills. The children got a lot out of the experience, and had fun. We were lucky to have her visit us.

Also visiting was the, "Deadly Australians", tour. The students were told about many of the poisonous creatures we may encounter, and the first aid needed if we became too close! The children were able to see a variety of spiders, snakes, turtles and lizards, some even being lucky enough to have some hands on experiences with a friendly snake.

Members of our talented choir have been working hard with Mr Julian and Miss Gilmour to play and record a new school song. This is very exciting and we are looking forward to hearing it for the first time at our upcoming speech day.

More excitement this Friday, when the children standing for a school leadership position in 2010 will give their election speeches. This will be followed by the staff and students voting. This year we are very fortunate to have the Electoral Office coming to run our election for us.

Staff from the Electoral Office will be showing us how elections are run properly, and supervising the voting and counting. Our assembly will begin at 9:15 am, and this will be followed by prefect speeches and voting. All members of the public are most welcome to attend.

Eisteddfod

Eisteddfod season is a wonderful opportunity for the many talented singers and musicians at our school to showcase their talents. Last Tuesday our Choir competed in the Leeton Eisteddfod. They travelled over by bus, and received a highly commended from the adjudicator for their catchy performance of "Come Learn With Me. This is a variation of the popular Ben Lee song, "Catch My Disease" arranged by Miss Gilmore and Mr. Julian. They accompanied the choir on keyboard and guitar respectively.

Following the success of the Choir, our school again entered the Eisteddfod last Thursday with an instrumental and voice ensemble. This was made up of both the Choir and Marimba groups, who performed, "Pick A Bale Of Cotton".

The adjudicator commended the group on their terrific musicality, timing, rhythm and entertaining actions. They were awarded first prize in their section, and returned to school with a trophy, a banner and a cheque. Congratulations to them and to their talented teachers, Miss Gilmore, Mr. Julian and Mr. McCabe.

Students from our school also had success in the duet for voice section, Jessica Buchanan and Rachel Warren won this category with their rendition of " Soon and Very Soon". Later this week, we have more Eisteddfod performances with our Ukulele group competing in the instrumental section, and Year Three are entered in the percussion section. We wish both groups well and know they do us proud.

Term Three

Staff and students at NPS are looking forward to a busy term 3.Our transition to kindergarten program has begun. It will run on a Thursday and Friday from 9.30 to 11.30am, and is an excellent opportunity for pre school children to ease into "Big School" in a relaxed and friendly way. There is also a bus service available to pick up and drop off children. If anyone has any questions about transition, or wish to enroll children, please contact the school for further information.

It is Narrandera Public School's turn to host the District Athletics carnival this year. It will be held in Leeton on August 21st. We will be hosting the canteen there, which will be a final fundraiser for the Senior excursion to Canberra, which will be happening during the last week of this term. We will have several children representing us at District Athletics, following our recent school athletics carnival. Major award winners from the day were: Junior Boys Champion: Josiah Romeo, Junior Girls Champion: Eilish Simpson, 11 Years Boys Champion: Jacob Bolton, 11 Years Girls Champion: Shelby Perram, Senior Boys Champion: Jordan Druitt, Senior Girls Champion Claire Russell, and the winning house this year was Morundah.

We will also be holding our school fete this term. It will be in the school grounds on Saturday September 19th, there will be lots to see, do and eat so mark it in your calendars. Other upcoming events this term are Life Education Van Visit, CWA, Egypt project presentations, school photos and the delivery of 11 new computers for our computer room.

Information Evening

On Wednesday evening, August 5th, Narrandera Public school held a very successful information evening. This evening was targeted at all community members who wished to find out more about our school, some of the fantastic programs we run, and the types of lessons our students participate in. The evening was attended by about 40 current and prospective parents, and friends.

The evening began in the library, with a welcome by our school leaders, and an entertaining performance by the school Choir and Marimba group. Following that, parents and friends participating in some hands on, practical lessons which were led by some of our teaching staff.

The first lesson was a ukulele master class where Mr Julian taught the class to play two songs, this was followed by a Science class focusing on air pressure. Students had to design and make an air powered vehicle which would safely transport an egg across the classroom.

The third lesson of the evening was a guide to practical Maths lessons which can be used at home or school, and the last lesson was how visual literacy including film making can be used in the classroom. At the end of the lessons, there was supper and a chance for the visitors to speak to staff and the school leaders. Thanks to all who attended and who helped to make it such a fun and positive evening
